Four retailers due to open at Liverpool One later this year are facing delays because of complications with the redevelopment of listed buildings.

Developer Grosvenor has said Ghost, Dune, Reiss and Jigsaw on St Peter’s Lane in the development will receive the keys to their buildings as much as two months later than anticipated. This will mean a loss of trade in the crucial run-up to Christmas.

A Jigsaw spokeswoman confirmed that its unit has been delayed “due to unforeseen circumstances within the listed building”. She added: “We are hoping to take occupation before the end of October and our fit-out will take around 12 weeks.”

It is understood that one retailer on St Peter’s Lane was due to open in time for Christmas, but will now not complete fitting out the store until spring.

Grosvenor has converted some listed buildings on St Peter’s Lane, keeping existing facades but altering the structures inside. The works have proved more complicated than was originally thought, owing in part to their status as listed buildings.

A spokesman for the landlord said that delays are common on shopping centre builds, particularly those involving listed buildings.

Grosvenor head of retail leasing Neil Barber said: “It’s unfortunate. By the time we started work on the buildings, there were issues over the structure. We’re spending a lot of money turning these old buildings into shops. Ideally they would all open at the same time, but there were complications.”

Grosvenor has recently completed a string of signings, including Onitsuka Tiger, Fat Face, Leia and Waterstone’s, as well as local independent brands Drome and Foot Asylum.
