Quirky fashion chain Urban Outfitters is to open smaller format stores as it seeks to grow its UK store portfolio by a third by the end of the year.

Two smaller shops will open in Cardiff and Spitalfields in London.

A spokeswoman declined to give the exact size, but said they would be on just one floor, while its traditional stores are laid out over two or three floors. Its average stores range from 6,000 sq ft to 13,000 sq ft.

Urban Outfitters will also open two traditional-sized shops, in Bath and Brighton’s Churchill Square shopping centre, taking its UK store count to 16. Urban Outfitters also added ratings and reviews to its website last week, and a spokeswoman said the move would enable customers to give it feedback.

The chain’s US parent company this week reported like-for-like sales growth across the global business of 11% in the three months to July 31.
