Those who work in the retail industry increasingly need new skills to keep pace with the latest technological innovations. However, rather than just teaching staff how to use a tablet computer point-of-sale device, Maplin has taken things one step further. It has launched the Drone Academy – no, it’s not a sequel to the BBC television talent show Fame Academy. Instead it is a place where Maplin staff can become experts in flying the DJI Phantom 3 Advanced Quadcopter Drone. They are being taught by the retailer’s ‘drone expert’ Russell Stephens, so Maplin students will hopefully pass with flying colours.

With the summer months behind us and Christmas less than 90 days away, the desire to sculpt the perfect beach body has fallen by the wayside for plenty of people. And one grocery shopper has encapsulated that mentality in this telling image. The picture, which was taken at an undisclosed Morrisons store, suggests one customer has ditched a £1 bag of prepared kale in favour of the supermarket’s own-label Cheese Puffs. Chris Brosnahan tweeted the image alongside the caption: “You can actually see the exact moment the diet died.” This decision was clearly the final kale in the coffin.

Swedish furniture specialist Ikea marked the start of construction of its latest branch in Reading – its first new build in the UK for seven years – with a ceremonial cementing. The retailer’s UK boss Gillian Drakeford (second left) was among those mucking in, donning a hard hat and high-vis gear to help cement one of the first steel columns in place.
