DSGi has reported surging sales in TVs in the run up to the World Cup, with this year’s tournament “shaping up to be best World Cup ever” for the retailer in terms of TV sales.

TV sales were up more than 140% year-on-year last week across the retailer’s Currys, PC World and Dixons.co.uk businesses.

Compared with the same period four years ago - in the run up to the last World Cup - sales in the category jumped by around 80%.

The retailer said demand for LED TVs, bigger screens and 1080p High Definition products has been “exceptionally strong”, with 50 inch TVs the strongest sellers last week.

DSGi  said the promotion it has run since April has helped draw shoppers through its doors. Promotions included giving fans £10 cash back for every goal England scores in South Africa, when they purchased a TV worth £599 or more.

As reported in the current edition of Retail Week, many store groups will have to pull out all the stops to benefit from a sales uplift during the World Cup.
