House of Fraser’s first store in China represents a major investment from its owner Sanpower, with six floors of retail, entertainment and dining space.

The store is in the central shopping district of Nanjing, a city of eight million people, an hour outside of Shanghai.

Nanjing is also home to House of Fraser’s owner, Chinese conglomerate Sanpower.

The six-floor store opened on December 21 last year.

Its layout takes its cues from traditional Western department stores, with beauty counters on the ground floor and fashion on higher floors.

More atypical features include six themed eateries, an ajoining gaming and karaoke space and a wig salon – an emerging trend in China. There is also a cinema, run by an independent operator.

The store also feeds into the adjoining Hamley’s and Brookstone stores, both owned by Sanpower and chaired by House of Fraser chairman Frank Slevin.

Like many large Chinese department stores, the store has entrances both to the street and to the city’s underground system.
