Next chief executive Lord Wolfson provided a temperature-check for retail as the industry looks forward to the golden quarter and ponders the impact of the forthcoming Budget

He has scaled back the sales growth estimate for the second half from 2.8% to 2%. “That’s mainly about the economic environment,” he said. The prime concerns are rising inflation, higher mortgage interest costs and a lacklustre jobs market. “These worries will only be compounded if they are accompanied by tax rises,” he said.
