Amazon launched in the UK 15 years ago. Here are 15 facts about the etail giant.

  • Since launching in 1998 as an online book retailer, Amazon.co.uk now offers customers over 100 million items in over 30 product categories ranging from Health & Beauty and Sports and Outdoors to Clothing and Grocery

Employees

  • Amazon has more than 6,000 permanent employees in the UK, and aims to create more than 2,000 new permanent jobs over the next two years. This Christmas, Amazon will hire over 15,000 temporary associates across the UK to help deliver millions of products to customers
  • Amazon has two technology development centres in the UK - one in London and one in Scotland. At these centres, teams work on the “next generation” of Film and TV services as well as new website features

Fulfilment centres & delivery

  • There are eight fulfilment centres throughout the UK in Rugeley, Swansea, Dunfermline, Peterborough, Gourock, Doncaster, Marston Gate and Hemel Hempstead
  • The fulfilment centres each house millions of products. The largest fulfilment centre is in Dunfermline which is the size of 14 football pitches (1 million sq ft.)
  • During Amazon.co.uk’s busiest 24 hour period over Christmas 2012, a delivery lorry left one of Amazon’s eight UK fulfilment centres on average once every 2 minutes and 10 seconds
  • On its busiest day in the run up to Christmas (Monday 3rd December), 3.5 million items were ordered on Amazon.co.uk - a rate of around 41 items ordered per second
  • Amazon.co.uk offers a range of delivery options including Amazon Prime which gives customers unlimited One-Day Delivery on millions of eligible items for an annual fee of £49. Amazon.co.uk also now offers Evening Delivery (same-day) in 19 cities across the UK
  • Amazon has invested over £1bn in UK infrastructure. Amazon also says it “supports the British economy” by purchasing goods and services from British suppliers. It says over the last 5 years more than £1bn has been paid to delivery companies like Royal Mail to deliver packages across the UK
  • In addition to delivery to their door, customers can have their products delivered to Amazon Lockers or Pick up points. There are hundreds of Amazon Lockers across the UK as well as thousands of Collect+ locations

Amazon Services

  • Tens of thousands of small and medium sized UK businesses sell on Amazon Marketplace.  They can offer their products from all of Amazon’s websites throughout Europe, reaching tens of millions of customers across Europe
  • Membership programme Amazon Family, “designed to save families both time and money”, offers members discounts including 20% off nappies, as well as three months’ free subscription to Amazon Prime and exclusive offers every month
  • Customers can submit reviews for any product listed on Amazon.co.uk to help their fellow customers decide what to buy
  • Amazon.co.uk employs recommendation technology to refer customers to items they might like based on products that customers have purchased and rated on the site
  • The Amazon.co.uk has a range of shopping apps and barcode scanning is available on the iPhone, Android and Windows Phone
