Amazon is the world’s largest online retailer. The US-based giant reported total UK revenues of £24.4bn in the year to 31 December 2022 (FY2022), but gross merchandise volume for the site is much higher when third-party sales marketplace sales are considered.

Amazon’s ecosystem is huge, and its third-party sellers are responsible for around 60% of items sold, which allows Amazon to offer a huge assortment and generate income from its sellers through commission and services such as FBA (fulfilled by Amazon). Its Prime loyalty scheme locks customers in to shopping with Amazon - whether they join for the free delivery or entertainment, data shows that these customers shop more frequently and across more categories.
