Ikea’s UK sales rose as the Swedish furniture and homewares retailer marked 30 years in Britain.

Total sales climbed 5.8% to £1.8bn in the year to August 31, 2017, helping Ikea achieve a cumulative 57% increase in sales over the last six years.

The retailer did not disclose its profits. Online sales rose 10% and now account for 15% of total sales.

Market share inched up 0.5%. Ikea aims to garner a 15% market share by 2027.

Ikea UK boss Gillian Drakeford said: “We have ambitious expansion plans for the UK and are committed to making Ikea more accessible to the many people. At a time of economic uncertainty, we have continued to outperform the market.

“We’re thrilled to have achieved these results while investing in our people, contributing positively to the UK society and making Ikea more accessible. Looking ahead, we remain committed to our vision to create a better everyday life for the many people.”

Ikea UK opened a new store in Sheffield during the year and plans to open stores in Exeter and Greenwich over the next year.

The global business entered the gig economy, acquiring on-demand odd-jobs firm TaskRabbit in September. It was one of a series of retailers to move into services, with John Lewis launching a Home Solutions tradesmen trial.
