Ashfield DIY Centre, Settle, North Yorkshire I’ve long wanted to sing the praises of this store. It really does stock everything you could possibly need for any home or garden task, all in a fraction of the space of your average DIY superstore.

It’s a true Aladdin’s cave. It is easy to shop despite so much stacked into so little space, with better value and choice than the multiples. Crowded it may get, but it is easy to identify the sections and move around.

Moreover, the staff – younger and older alike – are amazingly knowledgeable and unfailingly helpful, with spot-on advice every time. Nothing is too much bother. Its a real gem.

Co-operative local store, Settle, North Yorkshire The picture says it all. Would you be attracted in? OK, I was in a newer generation Co-op recently and it looked excellent. However, inside, both it and the Settle store suffered from empty shelves of offers and lowest unit price items. The Settle store had no prices on the special offer gondolas, or their contents.

Lacking overhead section signs, it is frustrating to shop, while the aisles are so narrow one breathes in and turns sideways to pass a shopper with a trolley. Yes, staff are friendly and it can be busy – with locals. Settle, though, is also a tourist centre, but few would dare venture into this cave.
