Wilko is a privately owned, value-led mixed goods retailer with some 414 UK stores and annual sales of around £1.4bn.

Originally trading as Wilkinson Hardware Stores, in 2014 the retailer completed a multichannel restructuring of the business and rebranded it as Wilko. Click-and-collect has been rolled out across the entire network and Argos-style customer order points introduced.

Wilko is investing in an agile workforce, interactive website and a seamless experience across online and offline channels.

Sales have come under pressure over the past couple of years. In the year to January 2021, overall sales declined by 7.3% to £1.36bn as Covid reduced footfall to stores, particularly in town and city centres. Despite online sales almost doubling to £81.7m during the year, this was not enough to offset the decline as the online channel only accounts for around 6% of total sales.

Stringent cost control measures have seen the retailer back in the black for the past two years but pre-tax profit slumped 61.6% to £4.4m in FY2020.
