The Range is a rapidly expanding, mixed goods superstore operation focused on homewares that was founded by Chris Dawson in the late 1980s. Dawson continues to lead the firm as chairman.

In recent years, The Range has stepped up investment in technology and its supply chain capabilities as it looks to keep up with its rapid growth.

It opened a 1.2 million sq ft distribution centre in Avonmouth a few years ago. It is also aiming for its transactional site to account for a larger share of sales.

The Range has achieved national representation, with around 200 large stores across the UK.  It has also opened eight stores in the Republic of Ireland.

Sales growth slowed to 4.5% in the year to end-January 2022 (FY2021) on the back of a 35% surge the year before, with total sales hitting the £1.4bn mark in FY2021.

While it remains a highly profitable business, profits came under pressure from rising costs in FY2021, with operating margin falling back to 9.8% from a peak of 15.0% the year before.
