Legalisation expected in the autumn
Computer chain PC World, owned by DSG, will begin stocking FM transmitters from today, despite the devices not being authorised for use in the UK.

FM transmitters can be used to connect MP3 players and other personal audio devices wirelessly to radios and in-car entertainment systems.

The transmitters are not at present authorised for use in the UK without a broadcasting licence, owing to fears that they could interfere with broadcast services.

Industry regulator Ofcom put forward a proposal to legalise the devices last month, in response to growing consumer demand. It expects FM transmitters to be cleared for use in the UK by late autumn.

PC World commercial director Bryan Magrath said: 'We're giving our customers a head start on using this exciting and convenient technology while abroad. By offering the products in the UK, we will be able to provide customers with an easy technical support route, something that is currently unavailable to those who already import these devices from abroad.'

Customers are being informed of the appropriate use of the product by notices at the point of sale.

The retailer is consulting with regulator Ofcom over its decision to begin selling the FM transmitters.
