20 depots hit by walkout
Thousands of Asda distribution workers are to strike for five consecutive days from June 30. Following a meeting in Manchester yesterday, general workers union the GMB will walk out of 20 depots from one minute past midnight on June 30 to 11.59pm on July 4.

The union is demanding national bargaining structures be put in place to cover pay, conditions and union facilities at the depots. It is also insisting that Asda pay staff an unpaid 2005 bonus of£300 per worker.

GMB members working at Asda distribution centres voted three to one in favour of strike action this Wednesday. The GMB has said it will take legal action if Asda employs agency staff during the strike.

The grocer has said that it will do everything 'lawfully possible' to ensure customers are not affected.

Depots affected include Bedford, Chepstow, Dartford, Didcot, Erith, Falkirk, Grangemouth, Ince George in Wigan, Lymedale in Staffordshire, Lutterworth in Leicestershire, Portbury in Bristol, Skelmersdale, Teesport, Wakefield and Washington.
