Debenhams and Liberty have been approached to set up a voucher scheme to help couples set to lose out on their wedding gifts after the collapse of Wrapit this week.

Peter Gelardi, who is managing director of the online gift service, approached the department stores yesterday to ask them to step in and provide alternative gifts for couples.

Gelardi said: “They are interested and I am fairly confident the stores will want to go with it,” he said. “The question is whether KPMG or HSBC will allow it to happen.”

Wrapit fell into administration on Monday after failing to secure rescue financing. KPMG was appointed administrator and has made 90 redundancies at the business.

Gelardi is proposing that HSBC gives affected couples vouchers equivalent to the value of goods they were waiting to be delivered to spend at participating stores.

Wrapit founder and retail director Pepita Diamand is considering joining a consortium to buy the business from the administrators.
