Workers back move for Xmas trading ban

Shop workers have backed their union's attempts to get the Government to ban large stores from trading on Christmas Day.

More than 1,000 workers responded to Government consultation on the issue via Usdaw - the biggest response the union has had to such consultation - and 99.9 per cent supported the proposed legislation.

Of those who responded, 98 per cent also feared that without legislation they could be forced to work on Christmas Day, despite family or religious commitments.

Usdaw said it was confident that the law will be soon changed to prevent big stores opening. The union has been running its Protect Christmas Day campaign for three years.
