Usdaw promotes anti-violence day

Trade union Usdaw will publicise its campaign against violence towards retail employees in more than 100 locations on September 17 - National Respect for Shopworkers Day.

Deputy general secretary John Hannett said that members will run stalls in retail centres including London and Glasgow.

The anti-abuse campaign, backed by groups including Sainsbury's and Littlewoods, was prompted by the level of violence shopworkers endure.

Since 1995, more than 118,000 retail staff have been attacked, more than 250,000 threatened and more than 500,000 verbally abused.

Hannett said: 'Retail staff are a massive part of the economy and local community and deserve respect.'
