Chief executive, Jessops

What was your first job in retailing?

I was a graduate trainee at HSBC retail banking but my first proper retail role was customer excellence director at Phones 4U.

Which retail company do you admire most and why?

Apple. It has everything - innovation, style, phenomenal customer service. It really brings the product alive. It’s a comfortable, modern and refreshing retail environment.

What is the trait you least like in yourself and why?

I’m really impatient and want everything done yesterday.

Who have you learnt most from in your retail career?

John Caudwell, founder of Phones 4U. He’s got fire in his belly and a will to win. He has absolute commitment to being the best he can be.

What advice would you give to someone starting out in retail?

I tell people it’s long hours, very hard work and there is huge competition for promotions within retailers. But I also tell them the rewards are second to none.

What keeps you awake at night?

I normally sleep really well but my 10-month-old baby keeps me awake at times.

What is the most satisfying part of your job?

I’ve always been a people person so the best part of my job is seeing teams better themselves and the business.

What is your proudest achievement?

Taking the job I’ve got now.

I love photography, so to be chief executive of a business that is all about photography is great.

What job would you have done if you hadn’t become a retailer?

I would have been a BA pilot but I failed on medical grounds. I was told that at six foot six inches I was too tall.

What is your favourite shop and why?

The Apple store on Regent Street, London. It’s got quality written all over it.

What was your last purchase?

A Sony NEX-5 compact system camera, from Jessops.
