Monki has challenged retail convention with dazzling decor that doesn’t break the bank.

The third Monki store to open in the UK, in Westfield Stratford, serves to frustrate the retail mantra that says that ‘less is more’.

Alongside the existing stores in Carnaby Street and Bristol, this single-floor store is an exercise in cramming as much stock and visual stimuli into as relatively small a space as possible.

The products on display fill the mid-shop and lower perimeter (the store shares premises thanks to a long, largely mirrored wall, with that other H&M newcomer Weekday), but the real action is higher up.

From the upper part of the left-hand wall, across the ceiling and down the other side, silver lametta fronds, silver disco balls suspended from pink carousels and dotted ceiling tiles are endlessly reflected in the upper perimeter mirrors.

The outcome is visual overload and Monki, as it always does, spins a series of stories about the interior.

And this may be a store that turns heads, but it is entirely scalable and low-cost.

It’s amazing what can be achieved without loosening the purse strings too much and this store certainly proves that sometimes more may actually be more.
