Tesco continues reign at top of the TNS charts

Tesco, Morrisons and Asda were again the biggest winners in grocery, according to latest market share figures from TNS.

Tesco continued to dominate for the 12 weeks to August 17. The retailer increased its share to 27.2 per cent compared with 26 per cent for the comparable period last year. The number one grocer last week applied more pressure to its rivals with£60 million of price cuts.

Wal-Mart-owned Asda increased its share to 16.7 per cent compared with 15.9 per cent a year ago, but Sainsbury's share dropped from 17.4 per cent to 16.4 per cent.

Morrisons' share now stands at 6.1 per cent - up from 5.8 per cent a year ago. Safeway's share decreased to 9.3 per cent from 9.9 per cent.
