Amazon is delaying Prime Day until October due to pressure on its supply chain network triggered by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, according to reports.

The online behemoth has postponed its annual shopping bonanza, which has previously taken place in the summer months, according to an email first reported by Business Insider.

Amazon has reportedly contacted third-party sellers to say the discount event, which was previously mooted for September, is likely to be pushed back another month to the week of October 5.

The email advises sellers to view the week of October 5 as a “placeholder date” for Prime Day promotions but stresses that “exact Prime Day dates have not been announced”.

“A definitive date will be announced as we get closer to the event,” the email said.

Prime Day was launched in 2015 and has typically taken place during July, while the retailer’s annual Black Friday promotions typically drive spend in November.

Amazon told CNBC: “We have not made any announcements regarding Prime Day.”
