Streets Online launches music download service

Woolworths-owned entertainment e-tailer Streets Online has launched a pilot music download service to gauge customer demand.

The service - at www.streetsonline.co.uk/digital - allows customers to download single tracks for 99p, with no further commitment to buy. Whole albums can be downloaded for£7.99.

Woolworths entertainment distributor Entertainment UK (E.UK) is behind the launch and is in talks with big record labels to get them on board.

If the service is successful, it will be ramped up with a comprehensive music offer next year. It will also determine whether Woolworths launches downloads via its Web site.

E.UK head of digital Paul Zimmerman said there could be a big growth opportunity. He said: 'We want to get a good sense of what consumers want from this platform. There is a saying that in terms of buying physical goods online it is still only day one or day two. If that is the case, then morning has not even broken on digital downloads.'
