London-based department store pop-up Multiplex brings a unique and strikingly designed proposition to a tried and tested formula.

Pop-ups are fairly commonplace these days – hardly a week goes by without at least one new one hoping it is sufficiently different to draw in the crowds. And the great majority are small, principally owing to funding and available sites.

The idea of a pop-up department store is out of the ordinary and siting it next to a permanent department store puts it in a league of its own.

But this is what designer Tom Dixon has done, together with Selfridges, in the former Selfridges Hotel building.

Walk up the stairs into the shop, dubbed Multiplex, and the first impression is of Dixon’s iconic pendant copper lights set in a large, windowless, dark – although in places glittery – space.

The ‘department store’ is home to around 30 different designer brands and features an interior that uses foil and black walls to strike an industrial, contemporary note.

The pop-up closes on October 15.
