Few and Far is a contemporary update on what in days gone by would have been referred to as an emporium – a purveyor of products with a whiff of the exotic about them.

Designed and owned by Priscilla Carluccio, Sir Terence Conran’s sister, this 3,500 sq ft shop is spread over two floors and is at the far end of London’s Brompton Road, where Knightsbridge morphs into South Kensington.

It is the merchandising that really sets this store apart. At present, an Indian theme has just been installed for summer (geddit?!) and the use of oranges and reds does well at recreating the vibrancy of Rajasthan.

Couple this with a profusion of small objects, again in bright colours, and the picture of a well-ordered, but brimful subcontinental shop is complete.

All of this has been achieved thanks to a store design that allows rapid scene changes. The floor, for instance, is like an outsize jigsaw, built of individual sections that can be changed to assist layout overhauls. This spring the feature enabled a portion of the floor to be removed and the space planted with grass and daffodils, creating an entirely new in-store vista.

The ceiling also allows for flexibility, with a lattice-like arrangement spread across it, allowing poles to be inserted and partitions to be created at will. Even the store logo takes 11 different forms, so change can be reflected internally and externally each season.

The store has been open just over a year but, owing to its design, it rises to the difficult challenge of appearing perennially new.
