Stevenage town centre to get £80m makeover

Stevenage Borough Council and the Government's regeneration agency English Partnerships have shortlisted four developers for a 200,000 sq ft (18,580 sq m) retail scheme in the centre of Stevenage, Hertfordshire. Henry Boot Developments, Morley Fund Management, Wilson Bowden Developments and ING Real Estate/Stanhope now have until October 2003 to work up detailed proposals.

In addition to the retail space, the scheme's promoters want to introduce a wider range of land uses into the town centre, and the redevelopment will include leisure, restaurants, affordable homes, public spaces, community facilities and a public transport interchange. The£80 million phased development could take up to 10 years to complete.

A preferred developer is expected to be appointed by the end of November, with plans going out to public consultation before the end of the year.

Stevenage was the first English New Town, designated in 1946. With the town now earmarked for further population growth, the council recognises that the town centre facilities need expanding and upgrading.

Stevenage Borough Council regeneration manager Peter Grant said: 'We recognise that the town centre will need to undergo a substantial change to make it more sustainable and vibrant.'

Chesterton and Lambert Smith Hampton are acting as development advisors, and EDAW is responsible for the design brief.
