Solutions News - Home Bargains system to aid Chip & PIN move

Home Bargains, the chain of 80 discount stores across the north of England, is implementing a new network to facilitate the move to Chip and PIN technology.

The deal should cut till queues and improve head office access to sales data. Information is collected every evening and processed remotely overnight before being presented to head office. Home Bargains' tills take£25 million a year.

The system, from XKS, also provides integrated electronic transfer of funds at the point of sale and access to historical sales data.

Home Bargains took the opportunity to standardise its hardware and software as part of the project.

- Meanwhile, security consultancy The 3rd Man has warned retailers not to let Chip and PIN distract them from 'normal' card not present (CNP) fraud. CNP fraud almost doubled between 2000 and 2002, from£57 million to£110 million. Risk consultant Steve Tyas said: 'We all appreciate the need to support Chip and PIN, although not at the expense of other initiatives.'
