A queue of about 200 formed early this morning at Hennes' Oxford Street flagship store, as Roberto Cavalli became the latest designer to launch a one-off exclusive range for the retailer.

Crowds mobbed the store and women pushed each other out of the way to claim the coveted product. Staff struggled to keep the rails stocked and the scene just half an hour after the doors opened resembled a frenzied jumble sale.

Some items sold out in just 15 minutes and appeared on eBay minutes later for more than£100 – far in excess of the retail price.

World-renowned designer Cavalli’s designs are often sported by A-list celebrities. At present, he is designing outfits for the Spice Girls’ reunion world tour.

Cavalli joins a long list of big names to design special ranges for the Swedish retailer. Pop diva Madonna and fashion designer Stella McCartney caused similar frantic scenes when they created fashion offers for H&M.

The Cavalli launch collection previewed last month with a celebrity party in Rome attended by stars of movies, music and fashion, including Halle Berry and Sharon Stone.

The Cavalli range will be available in 200 H&M stores worldwide and comprises 25 women’s pieces and 25 items for men.

An H&M spokeswoman said the launch had been "a huge success". By lunchtime, she said Cavalli's accessories range had sold out and there was limited stock of all items in stores nationwide.
