SAP is to acquire business intelligence specialist Business Objects.

Many retail and manufacturing companies use software from both vendors already.

Under the friendly takeover, the two business software vendors will develop business intelligence systems and embed analytics software in transactional applications. SAP said that these systems will be designed to allow companies to strengthen decision processes, increase customer value and create sustainable competitive advantage through real-time, multi-dimensional business intelligence.

Additional details regarding specific products and go-to-market strategies will be provided after the transaction is complete, which is expected to be in the first quarter of next year.

Neither company is planning to undertake significant restructuring as part of the takeover. Business Objects will operate as a standalone business as part of the SAP Group.
