Sainsbury's is to develop a city centre food store in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, as part of a major development planned by English Partnerships to kick-start the new generation of development.

The phase of residential growth will eventually see Milton Keynes' population double in size.

Abbeygate Developments, backed by Helical Bar, has been chosen by the CMK Board to bring forward the 6.5 acre (2.6 ha) city centre site following a design-led competition.

The winning scheme includes a 108,000 sq ft (10,035 sq m) Sainsbury's store, as well as 400 homes and offices, community and leisure space.

The supermarket wants to expand its presence in the city and will relocate from the existing Food Centre, which is also likely to be redeveloped as part of wider plans for the central Milton Keynes area.

The food store will serve a major urban community that is being created in the West End, which is expected to provide about 2,400 homes over the next eight years.
