Safeway awaits Green advance

Safeway had received no response from tycoon Philip Green to its request for clarification of his intentions as Retail Week went to press.

The grocer wrote to the Arcadia boss in the hope that he would sit down and talk after he asked Safeway, as a prospective bidder for the business, for more financial information. But a Safeway spokesman said that the information asked for by Green had already been provided in February.

He said: 'Normally a VC bidder would ask for a meeting with the company so that they could understand the figures. We haven't had any response yet.'

Safeway has now called a halt to its reformatting programme due to the uncertainty over its future. Other potential bidders for Safeway are Tesco, Asda and Sainsbury's, who showed interest after Morrisons made an offer.
