Retail Solutions - Next opts for Fibernet IP network

Fashion retailer Next has awarded a contract to communications specialist Fibernet to provide a Virtual Private Network (VPN), based on an Internet Protocol (IP) infrastructure.

The network will be based on the same technology as the Internet, so it should be reliable and flexible. Although it is run on a network shared with other Fibernet customers, it will act as if it was dedicated for the sole use of Next employees.

The network runs across Fibernet's TANet Multi-Protocol Label Switched network, which is able to distinguish between voice video and data packets.

It will connect more than 17 sites across the country to the retailer's headquarters in Leicester and its data centre in Warwick, allowing Next to run voice and data communications on the same network.

A statement from Next said: 'We wanted a fully managed converged network to reduce cost and improve overall performance. Fibernet accommodated our business goals.'

The announcement follows a string of similar contracts over the past few weeks, from retailers such as Monsoon, Debenhams and Dreams.
