Retail Solutions - Jessops aims to save £2m with Sun desktop solution

Jessops has invested in Sun Microsystems' StarOffice desktop solution and training package in an effort to cut costs by£2 million.

According to Sun, this is the largest UK roll-out of the solution, which comprises a PoS management system based on the StarOffice office productivity suite, and a hosted Sun Enterprise Learning Platform training application.

The solution will be rolled out to the retailer's 250-store estate and integrated with its existing PoS system.

Training is a critical factor for Jessops, which has built its brand on having comprehensive knowledge of the products it sells so that staff are able to assist customers with their purchasing decisions. It is hoped that the training platform will be able to help keep staff up to speed.

'We want to reduce our costs and IT complexity, but still be able to take advantage of the most innovative technology today,' said Jessops head of business systems development Gerald Walton.

'By centralising our PoS management and moving to StarOffice, we will not only save money, we will have a centralised view of each and every Jessops store,' he said.

'Understanding employees' core skills, identifying skills gaps, then plugging those gaps with just-in-time training will offer our customers an even better experience in-store,' explained Walton. 'The efficiencies we gain are not just at the IT level - this impacts every Jessops employee and will radically change the way we think about our staff and customer interaction.'
