Retail Solutions - IT bosses must deal with budget cuts next year

The majority of IT directors in the retail sector are facing up to the prospect of having their budgets slashed next year, according to a report.

Some 67 per cent of the 140 retail IT directors surveyed said that their budgets for the next 12 months have either been cut or will remain the same.

The findings, part of a survey by systems integr-ator Synstar, suggest that the most likely response is outsourcing, meaning possible staff cuts.

The research, called the Pressure Point Index, has run for the past four years and is taken from a sample of 700 IT directors in five business sectors.

Approximately 11 per cent of the sample said they would be responsible for reducing costs in the IT team. Half of all respondents said they would follow a selective outsourcing strategy to cope with the shrinkage in funds.

Synstar director of managed services Russell Flower said: 'Retail IT directors have got used to ever-diminishing budgets, and it's no surprise that delivering more for less will continue to be their focus throughout 2004.'
