Retail Property - Zara and H&M join Canterbury revamp scheme

Phase II of Whitefriars, Land Securities' retail-led regeneration in Canterbury city centre, is now 57 per cent pre-let.

Phase 1 of the 405,000 sq ft (37,625 sq m) scheme, including the Fenwick anchor store, opened last year.

Deals have now been agreed with a further eight retailers for the second phase, which is due to open in July. Zara will trade from 16,325 sq ft (1,515 sq m) and H&M from 20,600 sq ft (1,915 sq m). Boots, Tesco Metro, Clinton Cards, Sunglass Hut, Goldsmiths and Ann Summers are also on the tenant list.

Land Securities recently completed a deal with Ottakar's to take the majority of 6-8 Rose Lane, a building within the new Whitefriars quarter, which is under construction and due to open at Christmas.

Land Securities development director Mike McGuinness said: 'The success of Fenwick and the enthusiastic response by national retailers wanting bigger and better configured space in Whitefriars will reinforce Canterbury as a major retail destination.'
