Retail Property - Sofa Sofa sets sights on London for store portfolio

Mail order specialist Sofa Sofa has ambitions to expand its fledgling store portfolio, with a batch of out-of-town stores serving the London market.

The South Wales-based furniture retailer plans to open stores in and around the M25. Mark Hillier, an associate at Sofa Sofa's property agent Gerald Eve, said: 'They are the kind of company that could open a couple of stores a year, maybe more.'

Sofa Sofa, which is looking for stores of about 1,395 sq m, plans to focus its search on the retail parks around the east and south of London, as well as to the west of the capital. A North London out-of-town store has not been discounted.

Having secured retail park units to serve the London market, Sofa Sofa is likely to seek an additional store 90-minutes' drive north of Birmingham, serving the Manchester, Liverpool and Leeds markets.

Sofa Sofa took its first step into the retail property market with a store in Cardiff.

It opened its second store in time for Easter, after signing a 20-year FRI lease on a 1,395 sq m store at John Kemp Way, Birmingham. Johnson Fellows and Leon Fischer Associates advised landlord Maini Cash & Carry.
