Retail Property - Mad Dogs picks St Albans for second UK store

South African leisurewear retailer Mad Dogs has started to roll out its UK chain with a unit at Chester Properties' The Maltings shopping centre in St Albans, Hertfordshire. Around 80 UK stores are planned over the next five years.

Mad Dogs was launched in 1993 in Cavendish Square, the upmarket Cape Town shopping centre, and since then it has become a 28-strong chain across South Africa with 19 company-owned and nine franchise stores.

It trialled the concept at Bluewater last year and now to kick off European expansion, it has taken a new 15-year lease on Unit 6, Chequer Street in The Maltings for its first store.

The unit provides 40 sq m of retail space and 30 sq m of basement storage and has been taken at a rent of£32,000 per annum, which equates to£75 Zone A.

Mad Dogs is aiming to open 16 outlets in the northern Home Counties and south Midlands area and is already looking at units in Cambridge and Watford.

In addition, potential franchisees are looking at shops in Farnborough and Milton Keynes.

Douglas Stevens & Co is the letting agent for The Maltings.
