Ratner's jewellery Web site enjoys sparkling start

Gerald Ratner's recently launched jewellery Web site has received 70,000 visitors a week in its first fortnight of trading.

Geraldonline.com launched on November 17, several weeks later than expected, but Ratner said he was pleased with the initial response. 'I am delighted that the Web site has generated such interest and that, more importantly, people like the products and are buying them,' he said.

According to Ratner, the average spend per item is£121, and diamond rings have made up the majority of sales. However, he would not reveal how many have been bought.

The site comprises 600 lines costing between£15 and£2,500. Ratner asserts they are offered at a substantial discount to high street prices.

The launch marked a return to jewellery retail for Ratner, who left the industry more than a decade ago, following his infamous 'crap' products gaffe.
