Motor World owner Maccess has also placed its Godfrey Autoparts business and eponymous cash & carry chain into administration in a move that will cause the loss of approximately 350 jobs.

Motor World competes with Halfords and claims to be the UK’s largest independent car parts retailer.

The administration, which is being handled by BDO, will result in the closure of 34 Motor World stores. However Maccess intends to purchase from the administrators 32 branches and continue to operate them under the Motor World trading name.

A Maccess spokesman said: “The numbers of independent automotive stores across the UK have been reducing for several years.

“The dynamics of the industry have changed and the customer base has declined to a point where business is no longer viable. After taking advice, we are left with no alternative but to put these businesses into administration.”
