Property News - Tops bags George in Leeds deal

Tops Estates has taken the lead in the race to open Asda's first standalone George store.

Asda has signed up to take a 14,000 sq ft (1,300 sq m) two-level store at 8/14 Albion Street in Leeds. The assignment of Next's outlet at Croydon's Whitgift Centre, where Asda also intends to open a George outlet, has yet to be completed.

Neil Hockin, associate director at Lunson Mitchenall, letting agent for the Whitgift Centre, said: 'Next and Asda are progressing discussions to assign the leasehold.' Landlord's consent to the assignment is needed.

Next has expanded its operations at the Whitgift Centre and now occupies a two-level store of about 12,000 sq ft (1,115 sq m). Three separate leases need to be assigned.

George's Leeds store is part of Tops Estates' redevelopment and extension of Leeds Shopping Plaza, which has boosted Albion Street as a fashion pitch. MK One has also opened a 14,000 sq ft (1,300 sq m) two-level unit at 26 Albion Street.

Tops Estates chairman Everard Goodman is so pleased with the George deal that he intends to highlight it in the company's next annual report.
