Property News - Shortlist selected for Lewisham extension

Plans for a major extension to the retail core of Lewisham in southeast London have moved closer to reality, with the selection of a shortlist of four possible developers for the 500,000 sq ft (46,540 sq m) Lewisham Gateway site.

Berkeley Homes, Vinci and Amec - a joint venture between Bellway and Bridehall - will now be asked to make more detailed planning submissions to the London Development Agency, Lewisham Council, Transport for London and London Bus Services. The successful bidder will be announced next March.

The Lewisham Gateway site consists of eight acres of land immediately to the north of the Lewisham Shopping Centre. The London Development Agency envisages up to 500,000 sq ft (46,540 sq m) of new development on the site, with a mix of retail, residen-tial and commercial space alongside an enhanced transport interchange.

The scheme is one of 10 projects being piloted as part of Mayor of London Ken Livingstone's Making Space for Londoners plan.

Development of the Lewi-sham site is expected to begin in 2006.
