Property News - Rejuvenation of Trongate to lure boutiques

Glasgow's Merchant City Initiative has unveiled plans to refurbish a further batch of retail units on Trongate, where Selfridges plans to open a department store designed by Japanese award winning architect Toyo Ito.

The organisation, which is charged with helping revitalise Glasgow's down at heel Merchant City area to the east of prime Buchanan Street, is seeking council funding to upgrade the interiors of up to 14 stores on the southside of Trongate.

Support from Glasgow's Merchant City Townscape Heritage Initiative is being sought to restore the exteriors. A batch of about a dozen retail units at the east end of Trongate have already been restored.

Merchant City Initiative project officer Ewan Curtis, said: 'We are looking for users which will attract people into the area.' Quirky independents, rather than multiples are likely to be targeted for the new stores. 'This is the one area of Glasgow where a small retailer could get a unit at a reasonable rent,' said Curtis.
