Property News - Morrisons' Bury site plans under threat from rival

Morrisons has submitted plans for a 74,000 sq ft (6,875 sq m) store in Bury, Greater Manchester - but the scheme could be under threat from a rival developer.

The supermarket chain, in partnership with Dransfield Properties, wants to redevelop a six-acre (2.4ha) site in the suburb of Whitefield. And its proposals have the backing of the area's MP, Ivan Lewis.

Meanwhile, Bury Council had already expressed its support for a rival David McLean Homes development, which would mainly involve housing and a much smaller, 10,000 sq ft (930 sq m) store from Tesco.

Both schemes involve the redevelopment of a large site, which is home to the now-closed end-of-line retailer, The Brand Centre.

Bury Council is yet to decide on a planning application submitted by Morrisons. The proposal would also involve 407 car parking spaces for shoppers.

However, the authority has said it will look at the plans on their merits, despite its earlier preference for the rival proposal.

David McLean Homes is understood to be preparing a planning application to submit to the council.
