Property News - Flight Centre heads for growth

Travel agency Flight Centre is planning to step up its UK expansion programme in the coming year, in a move that will see it expand out of its existing stronghold in the Southeast.

The Australian-owned firm, which specialises in the sale of discount international airfares, holiday packages and domestic travel, opened seven stores in the UK last year, taking its portfolio to 72. It is aiming to open another 30 stores by June, taking it over the 100 mark.

Flight Centre is also trialling a new brand, Student Flights, in Bristol and Edinburgh, and it expects to have up to 10 Student Flights outlets by the end of this year.

Stephen Holloway, agent for Flight Centres' property adviser Knight Frank, said the focus will now be on creating a nationwide chain. 'Flight Centre UK is looking at strategic locations in both shopping centres and high streets in a number of major city locations nationwide,' he said.

Flight Centre operates more than 1,000 stores in the UK, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, the US, Canada and Hong Kong.
