Property News - Centres should cater for more than shoppers

Shopping centres are 'community destinations' and not just 'shopping facilities', according to joint research from Land Securities and architect Miller Hughes.

Miller Hughes managing director Charles Hughes has been liaising with Land Securities to look at the impacts of corporate social responsibility on the retail developments supply chain.

'In many instances, centres are managed with the active support and involvement of community stakeholders, and in ways which bring sustainable economic, environmental and social benefit,' said Hughes.

He added: 'One of the challenges for the industry is to explore ways in which issues of social responsibility and sustainability can be introduced at the very beginning of the procurement chain.'
