Property News - Cardiff plan gets the green light

Land Securities and Capital Shopping Centre's plans to redevelop much of Cardiff city centre have been given the go-ahead by Cardiff City Council.

The retail-led, mixed-use scheme incorporates up to 750,000 sq ft (70,000 sq m) of retail, with a 260,000 sq ft (24,000 sq m) department store, residential, leisure and hospitality developments, office space and new public areas.

Land Securities head of retail Peter Cleary said: 'Our plans incorporate units designed to respond to the shortage of retail space. The proposals have attracted interest from department stores, whose involvement will help to establish Cardiff as one of the top retail destinations in Europe.'

The design team - REID Architecture, Eric Kuhne Associates and Hyland Edgar Driver - have reinterpreted the traditional Cardiff shopping arcades.

At the same time they have designed a series of open spaces and public squares for the site, which lies to the Southwest of the existing St Davids shopping centre.

The National Assembly for Wales will consider the application during the summer, and the construction phase will commence in 2005, for opening in 2008.
