Property News - Capital & Counties wins bid for Ilford town centre

Liberty International subsidiary Capital & Counties, in a joint venture with Countryside Properties, has won the London Borough of Redbridge's design competition for a six-acre (2.4ha) site at Ilford town centre, east London.

Their mixed-use proposal for the site, immediately south of the High Road and the town hall, will see the creation of a new town square featuring a new Town Hall entrance and commercial and residential buildings - together with the existing theatre, library and cinema.

Overall, the development will comprise 120,000 sq ft (11,150 sq m) of retail and leisure space, 488 residential apartments, with affordable housing and communal gardens, a new entrance wing to the town hall, 15,500 sq ft (1,440 sq m) of community and civic facilities, and a 300- space car park.

The developers expect to submit a planning application in mid-2004.

Architect for the project is GMW. Chase & Partners is commercial property consultant.
