Primark's flagship store on London's Oxford Street notched the biggest single-day sales in its history last Saturday.

The Oxford Street store recorded sales in excess of£600,000 on Saturday, according to the Independent.

The store generates average weekly sales of more than£2 million.

Primark, which has unveiled plans to expand aggressively across Europe, focusing on the Iberian peninsula, has also poached a senior executive from European fashion retailer C&A.

Jose Luis Martinez has been appointed general manager of Iberia.

Sales in Spain now account for 8 per cent of Primark’s total sales since it opened in the region four years ago.

Primark has 187 stores in the UK, Ireland, Spain and Holland. It opened its first store in Holland in Rotterdam on December 1.

It will open its first store in Germany in Bremen in May and debut in Portugal in 2009.
