Poundstretcher plots store update drive

Poundstretcher, Brown & Jackson's remaining chain, is to introduce a new store design to 25 outlets this year and 'refresh' 100 of its outlets.

The look has been tested at shops in Southport and Burton-upon-Trent, which opened last month. The design has released space and improved navigation in-store. At Southport, the basket value has risen by 50 per cent compared to the rest of the chain, according to chief executive Angus Monro. The design will be introduced into 15 existing stores and up to 10 new ones this year.

However, Monro said the main focus will be the refreshment programme to spruce up 100 stores with smaller gondolas, a repositioning of ranges, and better lighting and PoS.

The programme begins next month, and will be completed in the summer.

'It's a low-cost investment and is not a modernisation, but bringing stores up to an acceptable standard,' said Monro.

Product is also being revamped and by September 90 per cent of the ranges at Poundstretcher will have been renewed, according to Monro.

Changes instigated already during Monro's four months at the helm helped to push like-for-like sales up 2.9 per cent at Poundstretcher for the seven weeks to January 11. For the half-year to December 28, same-store sales were up 0.8 per cent.
