Post-Christmas online shopping boom

The Christmas online spending bonanza showed no sign of slowing as e-tailers racked up business worth£1 billion in January for the second consecutive month.

Click-happy shoppers bucked last year's trend, opting to bargain hunt online and placing more orders than in December.

According to the IMRG E-Retail Sales Index, shoppers placed orders worth almost£1 billion online - up 128 per cent on the same period last year.

January's e-tail sales were 5 per cent higher than December and compare favourably with January last year, when sales dropped 17 per cent below the Christmas month.

The IMRG statistics are gathered from more than 80 e-tailers, including big names such as Argos and Debenhams.

IMRG's data provides evidence that online shopping is a boom area, growing 19 times faster than bricks-and-mortar retailing.

According to the British Retail Consortium, retail sales in January climbed by nearly 7 per cent year-on-year.
