Planning policy prompts Ikea to revise site hunt

Swedish retailer Ikea is in talks to acquire three edge-of-centre sites in a change of tactics prompted by Government planning guidelines.

Ikea will continue to seek out-of-town sites as part of its drive for another 20 stores, but will also compromise with two-level properties - plus underground parking - within walking distance of a town centre.

The stores will have the same capacity as Ikea's out-of-town sites, but a reduced footprint.

UK property manager Scott Cordrey said: 'There will be no change from the customer's or our point of view - this simply means we can offer non-car users the opportunity to shop with Ikea.'
